What a QR code actually is

A QR code is a 2D barcode invented by Denso Wave in 1994 to track car parts. Today it carries menus, Wi-Fi credentials, crypto addresses and event tickets. A single 25×25-module code holds ~47 alphanumeric characters; a dense 177×177 code holds 4,000+.

Every QR code has Reed-Solomon error correction — even with 30% of the code dirty, scratched or covered by a logo, the scanner can still read it. That is why the Style and Error Correction options matter: heavy styling and a centered logo reduce the readable area, so pair them with a higher error-correction level.

How to use

  1. 1

    Pick the type.

URL unless you need Wi-Fi, vCard, email or plain text. URL is by far the most scanned format.

  2. 2

    Fill in the content.

Keep URLs short — fewer characters means a simpler, easier-to-scan pattern at small print sizes.

  3. 3

    Choose a style and color.

Stick to high contrast (dark dots on a light background). Colored backgrounds reduce scan reliability in poor light.

  4. 4

    Tune error correction.

M for clean screens. H if you embed a logo or print on textured material.

  5. 5

    Sign in and download.

PNG for slides and social, SVG for print and unlimited resizing. Both downloads are free.
