What 'free' really means in this category

Almost every QR generator that markets itself as free is one of three things: a feature-limited demo of a paid product, a free tool that adds a watermark to your QR, or a tool that tracks every scan unless you upgrade. A genuinely free generator with no watermark and no tracking is rarer than you would think.

We tested for four properties: no watermark, no forced tracking redirect, SVG export, and customisation (colours, logo, dot style). Here is what we found.

1. Smartees QR Generator

3. The QR Code Generator (by Bitly)

Polished interface, owned by Bitly. The "free" tier in 2026 limits each user to a small number of QR codes per month and pushes you to sign up for a paid trial.

Output quality is excellent. SVG export requires a paid plan. Static QRs are unlimited if you can navigate the upsell flow.

Best for: users already inside the Bitly ecosystem who want unified link + QR analytics.

4. Goqr.me

Old-school, no-frills, no account. Generate, download, done. PNG and EPS output, no SVG. No advanced styling beyond colour. No tracking.

Best for: when you need a plain black-and-white QR in under thirty seconds and you do not care how it looks.

5. QRcode-monkey.com Alternative: mini-qr (self-hosted)

For developers who want to run their own QR generator: mini-qr is an open-source (MIT) Vue.js app. Self-host it on Vercel or Cloudflare Pages in five minutes and you have a permanent free generator with no usage limits.
