How AI background removal actually works
Instead of you tracing an outline, a neural segmentation model looks at the picture and decides, pixel by pixel, what is the subject and what is background. This tool loads that model (an ISNet/U²-Net network compiled to run in the browser) and applies it to your image directly on your device — the photo is never uploaded to a server, so it stays completely private. The result is a PNG with a real transparent alpha channel that you can drop onto any color, product page, slide or sticker sheet.
It shines on clear subjects with good separation from the background: a person, a product on a plain surface, a pet, a logo. The genuinely hard cases are wispy hair, fur, motion blur, glass and semi-transparent edges — there the model may leave a faint halo or trim a few strands. On the first run it downloads the model (a few megabytes to tens of megabytes) from the imgly CDN, then caches it so later images are fast. Nothing is stored on our side and no account is needed to preview the cut-out.
How to use

Hit Remove background. The first time, the model downloads and caches — the progress bar shows loading, then the actual cut-out.

Check the edges.
The result appears on a checkerboard so you can see the transparency. Clean subjects look perfect; inspect hair and fine detail closely.

Reuse or redo.
Happy with it? Move on. Fuzzy edges? Try a higher-resolution photo or one with more contrast between subject and background.
