How Much Data an Hour of Streaming Actually Uses
Netflix puts 4K at up to 7 GB an hour and SD at 1 GB. Here is how that maps onto a monthly cap, a mobile plan and a household that never stops watching.
Data caps rarely bite until someone connects a 4K television. Then a household that lived comfortably inside 200 GB a month starts hitting the ceiling in the third week. The arithmetic is simple once you have real per-hour figures, and only one major service publishes them clearly.
The published figures
Netflix documents data use per hour, per device, for each quality setting:
- Low: up to 0.3 GB per hour.
- Medium: up to 0.7 GB per hour.
- High: up to 1 GB per hour for SD, up to 3 GB for HD, up to 7 GB for 4K.
Most other services do not publish a comparable table, but you can derive the number from the bitrate they recommend. Divide megabits per second by 8 to get megabytes per second, then multiply by 3,600: a 15 Mbps 4K stream is about 6.75 GB an hour, a 5 Mbps HD stream about 2.25 GB, and a 2.5 Mbps 720p stream roughly 1.1 GB. Those figures line up with Netflix's published table, which is a good sign that the maths is sound rather than a coincidence.
Turn an hour into a month
Three hours of 4K a day is 21 GB a day and roughly 630 GB a month from a single screen. Two screens watching a mix of HD and 4K in the evening will clear a terabyte without anyone feeling extravagant. The same household capped to HD lands near 270 GB, and capped to Netflix's medium setting near 65 GB.
That spread, 65 GB to over 600 GB from identical viewing habits, is the whole point. Quality settings, not viewing hours, decide whether you hit a cap.
Mobile plans and tethering
- A 20 GB mobile allowance is about three hours of 4K, seven hours of HD, or 28 hours at the lowest quality setting.
- Tethering a TV to a phone is the fastest way to burn a month of data in one evening. Cap the quality on the device before you connect it, not after.
- Mobile apps often default to a lower ceiling on cellular and a higher one on Wi-Fi. Tethering looks like Wi-Fi to the TV, so that safeguard silently disappears.
Capping quality without noticing the difference
On a phone or a 13-inch laptop, the gap between HD and 4K is close to invisible at normal viewing distance, and it costs more than double the data. Practical steps, in the order that saves the most:
- Set playback quality per profile rather than per session, so it survives the next login.
- Turn off autoplay previews. Browsing a home screen for ten minutes can pull a gigabyte on its own.
- Download over Wi-Fi for travel instead of streaming the same episode twice.
- Leave 4K enabled only on the television, where you can actually see it.
The other monthly number
Data is only half of what streaming costs each month; the subscriptions are the other half, and they move more often than tariffs do. Measure rather than estimate
Most routers report per-device traffic for the current billing period, and both iOS and Android show per-app data use. Compare a week of measured traffic with the per-hour figures above; if the numbers are far apart, something else on the network, a cloud backup or a games console patching itself, is eating the allowance you blamed on films.
