Why optimize MDF cuts

MDF panels come in large boards — 2800 × 2070 mm and 2440 × 1220 mm are typical. Carcass jobs (cabinets, wardrobes, shelving) generate dozens of rectangular parts, and laying them out by hand almost always leaves usable material as scrap. This MDF cutting calculator packs your parts with a guillotine algorithm so you buy fewer boards and throw away less.

Thickness and kerf

MDF is sold in 12, 16 and 18 mm thicknesses; thickness does not change the 2D cutting layout, but your saw kerf does. Enter the real blade kerf (typically 3–4 mm) so the spacing between parts is correct — this keeps every finished piece on size.

MDF has no grain, so you can leave “Allow rotating parts” on for the tightest packing. For saving cut lists and cutting on the shop floor, try the free CutList app.
